Global Server Industry Due

San Francisco - Linux Server experience a drop in income in the smallest fourth quarter 2008. Consequently, the Linux server revenue worldwide is increasing, with income erase Windows and Unix servers.

Reports research firm International Data Corp. (IDC) reveals, the global server revenue in 2008 decreased sharply due to the economic crisis lacing. The biggest decline in global server revenue occurred in the fourth quarter (October-December) 2008.

"Major global server revenue has decreased most sharply since seven years ago. All the manufacturers of servers, all regions, and the entire server market segment experienced a decline in income," said Group Vice President IDC Enterprise Platforms Group Matthew Eastwood.

IDC explains, the ranking of the five major server manufacturers in the world in 2008 is not changed. However, none of the five major members of the group from negative growth. This is the first event since the first quarter (January-March) 2002.

IDC affirm, in the fourth quarter 2008 global server revenue down 14.0% per year to around USD13, 5 billion. In the fourth quarter 2007, the industry is still able to reap the income USD15, 7 billion. At that time, the world was not yet a crisis. For 2008 overall, compared to the entire 2007, the global server revenue down 3.3% to USD53, 3 billion, from USD55, 1 billion in 2007.

From the operating system, Unix server revenue experienced a decline of 6.2% per year in the fourth quarter 2008. At this period, worldwide Unix server revenue reached only USD4, 9 billion, alias representing 36.2% of total global server revenue in the fourth quarter 2008. According to IDC, Windows server revenue decline in the global fourth quarter 2008 reached 17.8% per year into USD4, 8 billion. Therefore, the Windows server donated 35.3% of total global server revenue in the fourth quarter 2008.
